What To Pack For Your Sailing Holiday

It’s normal to over pack for a beach holiday but in reality, less is more. If you’ve decided to charter a yacht you’ll want to check the weather for your destination – your clothing will depend on it. Also, check with your yacht charter company as to what to expect – there are many items that they may provide for you.

Luckily you’ll be island hopping, which doesn’t call for a lot of clothing. You’ll definitely want to pack a few swimming costumes. Leave one to dry between swims in the ocean. For day-to-day activities, lightweight shirts, shorts, dresses, skirts and sandals will do the trick and something airy and nice for evenings out. Depending on the season, you might want to bring along a light jumper or jacket.

You will be sailing and you don’t want to forget a waterproof jacket for unexpected rain and strong winds and closed-toe, non-slip deck shoes. These items are a must for on-board safety.

Out in the open, reflective water strengthens the sun’s rays considerably, so remember to pack a hat with a brim, sun cream and sunglasses. If the weather isn’t too hot, wear long sleeves, trousers and other protective clothing.

Don’t forget to pack your prescribed medicine. While most island shops will have essential toiletries available, if you prefer to bring your own, you’ll want to remember to pack shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, a toothbrush, contact lenses and solution, glasses, soap and anything else you might need.

It’s safe to assume that most yachts will have a first aid kit on board, but it’s better to be safe than sorry: bring your own. You’ll want to include bandages, travel sickness pills, antiseptic cream, insect repellent, antihistamine cream and anything else you think might be important to your health.

Most importantly, you don’t want to leave your legal documents and currency at home. You’ll need your passport or ID card, sailing certificate, driver’s license, insurance document and medical card – and bring a combination of cash and credit cards.

If you wish to stay connected, pack an adaptor, mobile phone, charger and camera.

Going on a yacht holiday is a relaxing, wonderful adventure but you don’t want to leave any of your essentials at home. Before setting sail, contact your charter company to check what you don’t need to worry about, and double-check the weather, packing accordingly.
