Small Ways to Improve Your Home

Do you want to improve the way your home looks? Even very small improvements can make a drastic difference in the way your home looks. Whether you are planning to sell your home soon or you just want to make it a little more comfortable to live in, here are some things you can do to improve your home.

Make a List
Go through your home and make a list of all the things you need to update or fix. Spend some time really looking for the issues that need to be repaired around the home. You will find that the home is likely missing some shingles, has cracked paint, or could use the addition of a few plants outside. As you look around the home, try to get an idea of where you need to get started to make a few changes. Some people hire interior decorators or realtors to walk through their home to help them find the areas that need some improvements. This is a great way to get another person’s opinion of what needs to be improved to really make the home stand out, but it isn’t the only option. Try to take an objective view of the home; it may help to rearrange the furniture in order to be able to look at the room removed from the associations you already have with it.

Seal the Home
A great way to improve your home is to focus on the energy costs. How much money are you losing due to inadequate insulation levels? What about the windows–are they drafty? Are you seeing an increase in your home’s energy bills? If you are, it is time to find and fix the issues. Pick up some caulk and seal all the windows where air and pests could get inside. Use some steel wool to plug up any holes that can allow pests inside the home. Use some putty or cement to fix any cracks in the foundation, but keep in mind that significant foundation damage should be examined by professionals.

Fix the Roof
It is a good idea to inspect your roof each year. Look for missing shingles and signs of serious problems. Replacing the missing shingles will go a long way toward improving your home as the roof protects the home from leaks. While you are making repairs to the roof, inspect the gutters. Repair any holes in the gutter system, and make plans to re-attach the gutters to the roof if they are pulling away from the home. Keeping the gutters clean will prevent water from pooling on the roof, which can cause leaks. Don’t forget to check the downspouts; water from the roof needs to drain well away from the house’s foundation in order to prevent flooding in the basement.

Paint the House
If you want to give your home a quick facelift, paint it. A fresh coat of paint will truly go a long way towards improving the way your home looks. Exterior paint must have the right color scheme to make your home look nice. Painting the interior of the house is another great way to give the home a simple facelift. It is affordable, and it’s easy to apply to the walls. Neutral colors appeal to most people, so plan on a neutral color scheme if you are selling the home soon.

Clean the Home
Keeping your house neat and tidy is the simplest way to keep it looking the way it should. Life is busy, and every now and then the little tasks that don’t get done from day to day build up. An easy DIY fix is to take a day and deep-clean the house–wash all the bedding, clean all the glass, stone, wood, and stainless steel surfaces, scrub the tub or the shower, and mop (or shampoo) the floors. Your home will be sparkling in no time.
